Build A Thicker, Healthier Lawn From the Ground Up

A healthy lawn starts with healthy soil. Over time, foot traffic, mowing, weather, and everyday use can compact the soil beneath your lawn, making it harder for grass roots to receive the air, water, and nutrients they need.

At Davenport Landscaping, our professional core aeration and overseeding services help relieve soil compaction, strengthen existing turf, and encourage thick, healthy new grass growth.

And we've upgraded the way we do it.

Our new 2026 Stinger Quad-Aer 3000 with an integrated seed box allows us to aerate and overseed simultaneously, helping put grass seed where it has the opportunity to make better contact with the soil. We can now adjust the hydraulic pressure of the tines, and set precise seeding rates for specific seed types or conditions.

What Is Core Aeration?

Core aeration uses specialized equipment to remove thousands of small plugs—or cores—of soil and thatch from your lawn.

Creating these openings helps relieve compacted soil and allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone.

The cores left behind aren't waste. We leave them on the lawn, where they naturally break down and return organic material to the soil.

Core aeration can help:

  • Relieve compacted soil

  • Improve water penetration

  • Improve nutrient availability

  • Encourage deeper root development

  • Reduce excessive thatch buildup

  • Strengthen existing turf

  • Prepare the lawn for overseeding

For many Cleveland lawns, aeration is one of the most beneficial things you can do to improve long-term turf health.

Core aeration is most beneficial when performed during the cooler months of September and October.

Aeration & Overseeding—At the Same Time

Traditionally, a lawn is aerated first and grass seed is broadcast across the property afterward.

We've invested in better equipment.

Davenport Landscaping uses a Stinger Quad-Aer equipped with an integrated seed box, allowing us to distribute grass seed while the machine is actively aerating the lawn.

As the Stinger creates openings in the soil, seed is applied during the same process.

Why does that matter?

Better Seed-to-Soil Contact

Grass seed needs contact with soil to germinate successfully. Aerating while overseeding creates opportunities for seed to reach exposed soil rather than simply resting on top of existing grass and thatch.

More Consistent Seed Distribution

Our integrated seeding system allows seed to be applied consistently throughout the aeration process.

One Efficient Process

Instead of treating aeration and overseeding as two completely separate operations, our equipment combines them into one specialized lawn-improvement process.

Better Conditions for New Grass

Combined with proper watering and favorable fall growing conditions, improved seed-to-soil contact helps give new seedlings the environment they need to germinate and establish.

When Is the Best Time to Aerate and Overseed in Northeast Ohio?

For the cool-season grasses commonly found throughout Northeast Ohio, late summer through early fall is generally the ideal time for aeration and overseeding.

Soil temperatures are still warm enough to encourage germination while cooler air temperatures reduce stress on young grass.

Fall also gives new grass an opportunity to develop before winter and continue maturing the following spring.

At Davenport Landscaping, we generally target our fall aeration and overseeding schedule around September through mid-October, depending on weather and growing conditions.

Because the ideal fall seeding window is limited, we recommend scheduling early.

Does My Lawn Need Aeration?

Your lawn may benefit from core aeration if you notice:

  • Hard or compacted soil

  • Water running off instead of soaking into the lawn

  • Thin or weak grass

  • Bare patches

  • Heavy foot or pet traffic

  • Excessive thatch

  • Poor growth despite fertilization

  • Areas that struggle during summer stress

Even lawns without obvious problems can benefit from periodic aeration as part of a proactive lawn-care program.

Even a well-maintained lawn can gradually become thin.

Heat, drought, disease, insects, pets, heavy traffic, soil compaction and normal turf aging can all contribute to thinning grass and bare areas.

Overseeding introduces new grass plants into the existing lawn without requiring a complete lawn renovation.

It's an excellent option for lawns that are generally healthy but could use greater density, color and overall turf coverage.

Overseeding can help:

  • Fill thin and bare areas

  • Increase turf density

  • Improve your lawn's appearance

  • Introduce healthy new grass plants

  • Help the lawn compete with weeds

  • Restore areas affected by summer stress

When paired with core aeration, overseeding becomes an especially effective way to rejuvenate an established lawn.
